Auckland Town Hall

Auckland

Theatre and Cinema

Auckland Town Hall remains the city's premier concert venue, and is a popular setting for functions, weddings, formal occasions and VIP receptions.

Exquisite, neo-Baroque building in the CBD, one of the world's best acoustic concert halls.  Five floors of limestone architecture, two performance rooms, ornate interiors and magical stained glass.

Auckland Town Hall is a majestic, hundred-year old building, completely renovated in the mid 1990s, and part of THE EDGE arts complex, which includes the Aotea Centre, The Civic, and Aotea Square

Sitting on a 'wedge' of land on central Queen Street, the hall was opened in 1911, and has seen its fair share of memorable events including visits from the HRH The Queen, Eleanor Roosevelt, Bill Clinton and the future (and ill-fated) King Edward VIII.

Auckland Town Hall was also where Beatlemania arrived on New Zealand shores; the Fab Four performing a concert here in 1964, after which music was never the same again, so it's appropriate that the hall has also hosted some of the world's other pioneering musicians, from all genres.  Giants such as Sir Yehudi Menuhin, Dame Joan Sutherland and Sir William Walton, have all appeared here, but it's not just a classical venue.  Acts such as The Rolling Stones, The Who, Elton John and even Marilyn Manson have graced the stage, such is the superiority of the hall's renowned acoustics.

The Great Hall can seat over 1500 people, on three levels, and is a triumph of early 20th century design, with a glorious panelled ceiling, church-like windows and a vast, 17m stage.  It also houses the famous Auckland Town Hall Organ, New Zealand's largest musical instrument. In addition, there is a Concert Chamber, seating 430 people, which is favoured by those musicians and classical groups for whom a smaller, more intimate audience is preferred.
