Kauri Park

Auckland

Gardens and Parks Points of Interest

August 2018 Update

This park has been closed due to the discovery of 'kauri dieback disease'. The fungus-like organism is spread by just a pinhead of mud or soil, with the major carriers being people and larger animals like pigs or goats.  For more inofrmation about the threat and the steps being taken to protect these ancient trees, please visit the Auckland Council website.

Take a trip to Birkenhead to uncover a beautiful forest off the tourist trail. The trees in Kauri Park are between 200 and 400 years old , surrounding a large stream which flows into Soldier Bay.

One of the most interesting aspects of the park is the relationship of the cold climate hard beech with the warm climate kauri tree both thriving in the same environment. Kauri Park is also notable for its rich mix of ferns and flowering native orchids that provide an ideal habitat for many native birds, including tui, ruru, fantail, New Zealand Pigeon and riroriro.

The main entrance from Rangitira Road leads to the start of the loop track which takes 1.5 hours to complete. The walk is narrow and steep in places and not suitable for young children.

Please note that there are limited parking spaces at the main entrance of the park at Rangitira Road. There is also another entry to the park at Hebe Place which is off Kauri Road.
