In Auckland, there’s no escaping the sea: it’s the foreground or background to every view, so you might as well give in, and get out there on it.
It’s an icon of the city and traversed by around 180,000 motorists a day, but the Auckland Harbour Bridge is also the location for an easy and accessible adventure for those who fancy getting hands-on.
You can take a tour, or a public bus when you pop over the harbour to Waiheke — but on a sunny day it’s hard to beat nosing around the island by yourself, and effortlessly tackling those otherwise daunting hills, on an e-bike.
The park is located around the corner from the Zoo and it has an interesting history. Back in the time, Western Springs Park was far away from Auckland City. The lake was known for clean and clear water, filled with eels that are present until today. The main source of the water that feeds the lake at Western Springs is rain falling on the slopes of the volcanoes - Mount Albert and a very popular Mount Eden.
If you are into nature, scenic drives, walks and cycling, as well as experiencing fresh New Zealand air, oysters, fish and ships, and a famous flat white while seating next to the ocean, you need to check out beautiful and friendly Maraetai beach and the area around.
The beautiful J.F. Kennedy Memorial Park definitely has one of the best views to Rangitoto Island and Hauraki Gulf, alongside rich Maori and military history.
The drive from the city around 45 min and the distance is 40 km. There is a huge free car park before the beach entrance. Once you park the car you will hear the sound of the water.
