Auckland to Coromandel Town The day begins with a 6:15 AM pickup from Auckland CBD. Auckland to Coromandel Town via Thames Coastal Drive Embark on a scenic road trip from Auckland to Coromandel Town, taking the breathtaking coastal route via Thames. Your journey begins with a relaxing drive through the rolling hills of the Waikato countryside before arriving in the historic town of Thames—known for its rich gold-mining heritage and charming colonial architecture. From here, the road transforms into one of New Zealand’s most spectacular coastal drives. Winding along the edge of the Firth of Thames, State Highway 25 offers dramatic sea views, pohutukawa-lined cliffs, quiet coves, and photo-worthy rest stops at places like Ruamahunga Bay and Waiomu Beach. Take your time, breathe in the salty sea air, and soak in the natural beauty at every turn. Arrive in Coromandel Town—a quaint village full of artistic flair, rustic cafes, and hidden gems like the Driving Creek Railway and nearby waterfalls. Whether you're after relaxation, photography, or adventure, this coastal drive delivers an unforgettable slice of New Zealand. Driving Creek Railway Experience Arrive in Coromandel Town and enjoy a unique rail journey on New Zealand’s only narrow-gauge mountain railway. Built by the late Barry Brickell, this handmade railway climbs through lush regenerating forest, tunnels, and bridges. The ride ends at the EyeFull Tower lookout, offering sweeping views of the Hauraki Gulf. It’s an engaging blend of conservation, engineering, and local artistry. Cathedral Cove Walk Continue to Hahei for a walk to Cathedral Cove, one of New Zealand’s most iconic coastal destinations. The walk is approximately 45 minutes each way and takes you through native bush and along spectacular coastal cliffs. At the end, you'll arrive at Cathedral Cove, known for its white sandy beach and dramatic rock arch. Enjoy time to explore the area or dip your feet in the ocean. The walk is moderate and requires suitable footwear. (Please bring an Umbrella or Poncho if its a rainy day) Return to Auckland After a full day of scenic highlights and relaxation, begin the journey back to Auckland. You will arrive back at your hotel around 4:30 to 5:00 PM, depending on traffic conditions.
