This evening tour begins with a welcome and safety briefing before you enter Awaruku Reserve, a 12-hectare native forest known for its iconic Kauri trees and Nikau Palms. Your guide shares insights about the ecological and cultural history of the area, including its significance as an ancient Māori settlement site.
As night falls, you’ll reach a secluded area dedicated to glowworm displays. See Arachnocampa luminosa larvae emit a soft blue-green light, and learn how these glowworms use bioluminescence and silk threads to capture prey. This natural phenomenon offers a unique chance to connect with the forest’s nocturnal life.
Following the glowworm viewing, the guide explains conservation efforts supporting native species like the New Zealand Kākā and Kererū. You’ll learn about ongoing ecological restoration projects within the reserve.
On select nights, the tour also covers bioluminescence in coastal environments, where marine organisms create glowing water displays. These conditions-dependent experiences provide further understanding of New Zealand’s living nightscape.
