Description
After pickup from your downtown Auckland CBD hotel, travel south over the Bombay Hills with panoramic views of the Waikato Region and Hauraki Plains. Your first stop is the Hobbiton Movie Set, where your guide helps you bypass the crowds for an official 2.5-hour tour. Explore the 10-acre site, including Hobbit Holes, The Green Dragon Inn, and The Mill, while learning how the set was created. Enjoy a complimentary specially brewed drink at The Green Dragon Inn.
You will then visit the Waitomo Glowworm Caves, New Zealand’s oldest attraction with tours dating back to 1887. Glide silently by boat through the caves, amazed by thousands of glowworms lighting the dark waters. Your guide may share the caves’ history, including stories connected to a Maori Chief. Walk through the Cathedral Cave, known for its acoustics. The tour includes a classic kiwi-style light lunch.
The journey follows the Waikato River, passing Taupiri, an important Maori burial ground. The day concludes with your return to your accommodation.
Note that photography is not allowed in glowworm areas to avoid disturbing the glowworms and their light recovery process. The tour operates in all weather conditions, with some easy walking involved.
