Description
This wine tasting tour near Auckland explores the region's winemaking history from the 1930s, established by Croatian families. It suits wine enthusiasts interested in heritage and coastal scenery.
At your first stop, taste richly flavored wines at the award-winning Soljans vineyard. Lunch is served at the Soljans winery restaurant, featuring Mediterranean-style dishes with New Zealand seasonal produce, paired with a glass of wine.
The next vineyard is Kumeu River, founded by the Brajkovich family in the 1940s. All grapes are hand harvested, and the winery remains family-run. Michael Brajkovich, a notable figure, was New Zealand’s first Master of Wine.
The tour continues to a mainland gannet nesting site on cliffs overlooking the Tasman Sea, offering close views of gannets without disturbing them (nesting season September to April). Enjoy the view of the wild black iron sand beach at Muriwai.
Conclude the day with a visit to Vineyard Cottages or Hunting Lodge (depending on availability) to sample local wines rich in heritage.
