Formed around 600 years ago, it is now a protected, pest-free sanctuary and one of Auckland’s most iconic natural attractions. Led by an experienced local guide, journey across ancient lava fields, through the world’s largest pōhutukawa forest, explore fascinating lava caves, and climb to the summit for spectacular 360-degree views across Auckland, the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park, and the surrounding volcanic islands. Along the way, your guide will share the stories that make Rangitoto so unique—from its explosive volcanic origins and remarkable ecological regeneration to its cultural significance for local iwi and the history of the island’s famous holiday baches.
