Located at the end of Takatu Road, Tāwharanui Regional Park is a protected conservation area that safeguards native wildlife and indigenous forests while maintaining rare dark-sky conditions.
The tour starts with an introduction by your guide, outlining the evening’s plan, safety guidelines, and information on the park’s ecosystems, conservation efforts, and wildlife.
As night falls, you embark on a slow, guided kiwi-spotting walk through native bush and open habitats. Your guide uses expert tracking techniques to identify kiwi signs, explaining their behavior, habitat needs, threats, and conservation measures. Each walk is unique, depending on weather and wildlife activity.
Far from city lights, the park offers exceptional star visibility. You will see dense star fields, planets, and seasonal constellations as your guide explains Southern Hemisphere night skies, linking science and navigation.
On some occasions, guests may witness bioluminescence along the shoreline. When conditions allow, movement in sand or water triggers a soft blue glow caused by microscopic organisms. Your guide provides scientific context for this phenomenon.
