Description
This exclusive tour departs Auckland at 6:00am and lasts approximately 10 hours. Along the way to Waitomo Caves, there is a brief stop at Taupiri where you can purchase coffee or breakfast at your own expense.
The journey passes through Otorohanga, stopping briefly at the intersection of State Highways 3 and 37 to view a statue of the extinct flightless bird Moa. From there, the tour continues to the Waitomo Glowworm Caves.
At Waitomo, explore an underground world formed over 30 million years. The tour includes walking and a silent boat ride through the Glowworm Grotto, where thousands of glowworms create a natural living light display unique to New Zealand. The cave features two levels: an upper chamber with delicate formations and a lower section with streams, glowworms, and the Cathedral. Guides, often descendants of the Maori explorers, provide historical and cultural insights.
After the Waitomo Caves, there is a lunch break at Waitomo Homestead or in Otorohanga town (lunch at your own expense).
The tour then continues to Ruakuri Caves, known for its length and cultural significance. Discovered by local Māori 400–500 years ago, Ruakuri means 'The Den of Dogs,' referencing the wild dogs once found near its entrance. Visitors descend through a man-made spiral entrance and witness shawl-like limestone formations, crystal features, and subterranean waterfalls. This cave offers glowworm viewing up close and permits photography.
On the return trip to Auckland, the tour stops at a scenic lookout over the Waikato River, New Zealand’s longest river, before arriving back at your accommodation.
