Matakana

Considered Auckland's 'foodie capital', Matakana is an hour north of the city and prides itself on offering fresh, organic food and drink, straight from the local fields and vineyards.

The weekly farmers' market (Saturdays) is always thriving, and is where you'll find delicious fruit and veg, spicy sausage, organic chocolate and boutique olive oils.

A stroll around here is bound to make you hungry so, afterwards, pop into the village for brunch at one of the pretty cafes and bistros, or trawl the many speciality food shops to assemble your own picnic, to enjoy down by the river.

The village also has an impressive three-screen boutique cinema, with a great cafe next door (the organic blueberry ice cream is a must). A visit to Matakana also gives you the opportunity to lose yourself in the galleries and gift shops that line Matakana Valley Road.

Later, take a drive through the lush countryside and out to one of the surrounding vineyards, before taking a stroll around the scenic bays of Whangateau Harbour.
