Directions to Stardome Observatory and Planetarium
Experience the glory of the night skies from the comfort of your own seat. Using the special effects of a planetarium, Stardome Observatory lets you observe the wonders of the universe.
Located in central Auckland, Stardome Observatory and Planetarium is situated in One Tree Hill Domain, one of the city's most prominent landmarks.
The Stardome Observatory and Planetarium was first opened in the 1960s, and today more than 120,000 visitors pass through the doors each year.
During the evenings and during the day at weekends, visitors can enjoy the 360-degree panoramic planetarium theatre that offers a stunning view of the night sky and a journey through more than 3000 stars, planets and the furthest reaches of the universe. Planetarium presenters take guests on a guided tour of the different constellations and explain what is visible in the Southern hemisphere sky. Tickets are required for Planetarium shows and booking is recommended.
Telescope viewing follows evening planetarium shows weather permitting, and Stardome staff help visitors spot stars, planets, and even moon craters.
Galleries and space-exhibits complement the overall experience giving visitors the chance to learn more about our solar system and it's planets and the Universe as a whole, as well as some of the forces that act upon it. The brightly coloured displays and hands on exhibits will keep children entertained as well as adults. Entry to the exhibits and foyer displays is free.
Visitors can browse the gift shop, which includes toys, books, star guides, and even telescopes for anyone who has been bitten by the stargazing bug.
