The Inside Loop: See Auckland's Coolest Neighbourhoods
23 ReviewsAuckland is regularly voted as one of the most liveable cities on Earth and this small group, guided electric bike tour is designed to showcase exactly why that title is deserved.
Situated off Kauri Road in Birkenhead, Fernglen Gardens is run by Auckland Council's Parks Department and is focused on the preservation and growth of New Zealand plants.
With 9 acres, the gardens feature well looked after walking trails that allow visitors the chance to enjoy a wide variety of species including two 300 year old kauri trees and ancient rimus clothed in epiphytes.
Just inside the entrance are information panels that explain the history of Fernglen Gardens and New Zealand flora.
Four out of every five New Zealand plants are found nowhere else in the world. At Fernglen Garden you can see native plants from all over the New Zealand botanical regions. There are also many native birds such as wood pigeons, tui, silvergreyes, fantails and grey warblers.
The gardens are open to visitors every day, during daylight hours. The entry to the garden is free and visitors are encouraged to sign the visitors' book located next to the information signs by the entrance gate.
