Le Roys Bush is a scenic reserve on Auckland's North Shore that protects a wide variety of fauna and flora including kauri, tanekaha, taraire, totara and many other ferns and plant species. Le Roys Bush features a waterfall, wetlands and views of Waitemata Harbour.
There is one main walking track that can be accessed from Onewa Road. The track takes an hour to walk at your leisure, descending steeply while following a stream down through the bush then on a level walk alongside the wetland all the way to Little Shoal Bay and its views of Waitemata Harbour and Auckland Harbour Bridge.
Walkers will pass by a beautiful waterfall on the way to the valley floor where the track forks into two paths. To the right, the track leads up to the cafes of Hinemoa Street, while the left path continues past wetlands and onto the picturesque Little Shoal Bay.
A keen gardener and collector of plants, Edward Le Roy purchased part of the upper valley in 1918, introducing into the land indigenous species from around New Zealand. The Forest and Bird Society, aided by government and local council contributions and a public subscription, purchased the land upon his death in 1947.
The reserve is currently managed by a community volunteer group - see www.leroysbush.org.nz for more information.
