Nineteen building and carpentry apprentices from across Auckland will be taking part in the annual NZCB Apprentice Challenge at the MOTAT Aviation Display Hall this weekend.
Those competing will be vying to win the regional title to progress to the national final next month, which boasts over $50,000 worth of prizes for the winner.
Competitors will have eight hours to construct a 1.5-metre high children’s castle playhouse, featuring a turret and working drawbridge. The playhouses must be built with pre-schoolers in mind as they will be donated to local early childhood education providers and other community groups after the competition.
The event is being held in conjunction with the inaugural Archikidz event and is free for visitors to attend. Archikidz is designed to engage and inspire the next generation of city-makers; children can participate in a range of building, design, and architectural activities and meet industry professionals from around the country (as well as enjoy free steam train rides and access to MOTAT’s world-class aviation collection).
The best time to attend the NZCB Apprentice Challenge is between 1pm and 4:30pm, with the winner announced at around 4:30pm on Saturday. The contestants and building industry suppliers, NZCB, Makita, ITM, Unitec and Archikidz will also be on-site at MOTAT to engage with visitors on Sunday 22 April.
