Maidment Theatre - Te Atamira - Auckland
Innovative and flexible arts centre on the University of Auckland's city campus. Main theatre plus studio, and venue for many of Auckland Theatre Company's drama productions.
Opened in 1976, and named after the man who was instrumental in its founding, the Maidment Theatre sits within the city campus grounds of the University of Auckland and is home to the university's drama group, Stage 2 Productions, as well as being the chosen site for many performances by the renowned Auckland Theatre Company. In 2000, the name “Te Altamira” was added to the centre's title, which means “stage” in Maori.
The theatre is notable for its very flexible staging and seating options, enabling a variety of productions to be staged here, from standard theatre, to contemporary dance, opera, lectures, films, and even concerts. With a capacity of 448, the main theatre offers a great view of the stage from every seat, as well as impressive acoustics. The adjoining Musgrove Studio (also named for one of the pivotal figures in the theatre's conception) is a smaller room, housing 104; an intimate venue designed to bring the audience right into the action, popular with independent theatre companies who want to perform in a more personal space.
The main foyer houses full ticketing services, a concessions stand, and displays artwork by some of New Zealand's most prominent artists, including Barbree Gummer, Don Binney and Brett Graham. Both theatre spaces can be hired, and have their own bars which serve a wide variety of beverages and light snacks, both prior and post-performance, and during intervals.
