Description

Begin your walking tour at Britomart and Commercial Bay, where Auckland’s waterfront became the gateway to a new British colony. Your local guide will reveal how Māori chiefs, British officials, traders, and settlers negotiated land, power, and sovereignty during a turning point in New Zealand history. Walk up historic Shortland Street while hearing the dramatic story of the 1840 Treaty of Waitangi. Through engaging storytelling, discover why its English and Māori versions carried different meanings, how Auckland was chosen as the colonial capital, and why these decisions remain deeply important today. Continue to Old Government House, the University of Auckland ClockTower, and Albert Park. Your guide will connect colonial landmarks with stories of governors, early institutions, Māori resistance, and the transformation of a small harbor settlement into New Zealand’s largest city.
